Chapter 8: The Cabin
Jonas's POV
On Wednesday morning I asked my foreman for the week between Christmas and New Year's.
He looked at me over his coffee and said, "You've never asked for a day off in eleven years."
"I know."
"You got a woman problem?"
"I have a wife," I said. "It's the same thing."
He laughed so hard he spilled the coffee, and wrote my name on the board.
"Day shift opens in January," he said. "I'll put you down. Go be a husband."
I stood in the yard office a minute longer with my hat in my hand.
Day shift.
I would see my wife awake, in the light, five days a week.
I'd never let myself want that before, because I figured she wouldn't.
At the gas station on Third I met my brother in the lot at seven-fifteen, as we sometimes do.
Each of us had a coffee on the hood of a truck.
Davin had driven in from the Kettering side in a clean white pickup with the company name on the door.
