Chapter 16: Nathan Resigns

I did not say a word to Mr. Berrien.

I picked up the box, and Rhona picked up the tablet, and we walked out through the sliding doors into the parking lot.

I had thanked that woman at my mother's funeral, with her check in my coat pocket.

I sat in the passenger seat of Rhona's hatchback and counted the lights on the hospital sign until I could breathe.

At seven the next morning, someone knocked on Rhona's apartment door.

Rhona looked through the peephole, then at me, and went to put on the kettle.

"I'm on shift at nine," she said. "He has until then."

Nathan stood in the hall in a gray suit with no tie and a cardboard box under his arm.

He looked as if he had not slept, and he did not try to hide it.

"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said.

"Then why are you here?"

"May I come in?"

I stepped aside, and he came into Rhona's cramped living room and set the box on her coffee table.
