Chapter 20: The Seat

I took the leather folder out of my bag and laid it on the table.

"These are the bank notes on Amesbury Freight," I said. "Three shell companies. Ninety days from call."

"Ms. MacAteer," the older man said carefully. "Whose name is on them?"

"Mine."

I let that sit.

"Ansel Hawke signed them over to me last Tuesday at dawn. I didn't ask him to. He told me I could call them, or tear them up, and he'd never ask which."

Roland's mouth opened and closed.

"You see?" he said to the room. "She's in his pocket."

"I'm holding his leash," I said. "And I'm the one who decides."

I opened the folder to the last page and read the clause aloud.

"The assignee owes the assignor nothing."

Somebody at the table made a sound that was almost a laugh.

"Here is what I'm going to do," I said.

"The notes stay uncalled. The fleet stays yours, and the drivers keep their jobs. I'm not burning down thirty years of work to punish one man."

I looked at Roland.

"But you step out of that chair this morning, and you answer to the trustee complaint I filed last week. You don't vote my sister's shares. You don't vote mine."

"You can't," said Roland.

"I can, and I'm going to."

Lila stood up beside me.

She had a sheet of paper in her hand, the proxy form with her signature across the bottom, which Chantal had taken from his desk on Saturday.

"I revoke this," she said.

Her voice shook, and she kept going.

"I signed it because you scared me, and I'm not scared of you now."
