Chapter 22: River Road

The troopers took Lyle out through the kitchen, with a hotel towel over his cuffs.

A major in a gray overcoat stepped up to the lectern afterward and said the thing the room needed to hear.

The investigation into Bram was closed, and the one into Lyle was open.

No one looked at Bram as a suspect after that.

Some of them looked at him as if they did not know where to put their eyes.

An old woman from the choir walked up to him and simply patted his sleeve, twice.

Then Fern took his arm and said she was tired, and the judge drove her home.

By midnight I was standing with Bram in the cold at the cemetery gates.

He had asked, in the car, in a very small voice.

"Could you show me?"

"Now?"

"Please."

I knew where it was in the dark.

I had walked there every October fourteenth for eleven years.

I always brought a coffee, and a biscuit for any dog nearby.

Two names on a gray stone, with a space under them that nobody had filled.
