Chapter 11: The Pantry

Conall's POV

The pack healer had a name for the plant before I finished describing it.

"Monkshood," she said, and she put the napkin down fast. "Wolfsbane. Where did you get this?"

"A kitchen."

"Then someone in that kitchen wants a wolf asleep." She lowered her voice. "A little of it dulls the nose and slows the change. A little more, for years, and a young wolf might never wake at all."

"Could she wake after five years?"

"If she stopped. If she's strong enough." She looked at my face and went pale. "Alpha, who is it?"

"I'll tell you when I know what to do," I said.

I went home at midnight and found Cassandra asleep in my bed with her hair across my pillow.

She was warm and curled on her side, with one hand open on the sheet where I would have been.

The window was cracked, and I could hear her heartbeat, steady and slow and her own.

She had shifted for the first time that night, and she was exhausted, and I could not wake her.

I could not tell her either.

If I told her, she would go straight to the Haskell house.

She would walk into that kitchen alone, with the whole pack against her and no proof, and Lorna would cry and say it was an old family recipe.

I needed to know before she did.

I got up very carefully, and she turned over and murmured my name without opening her eyes.
