Chapter 25: The Back Room
The oldest wife took Maggie out of my arms in the lodge parking lot.
"I live two minutes from the shop," she said. "Go do what you need to do. She'll be asleep before you're back."
"I only need an hour."
"Honey, take two."
I watched her taillights go, and my arms felt light and wrong.
Rafe stood beside me with his keys in his hand.
"Where?" he said.
"The shop."
He looked at me.
"I still have June's key," I said. "My ledgers are in the back room, my father's toolbox is under the desk, and Boone said every bolt would be sold. I want what's mine out before he lists it."
That was true, and it was also not why I wanted to go.
We drove down Route 9 with the windows cracked.
The shop was dark behind its chain-link fence, the tarp-covered bikes still lined up in the yard.
I let us in through the back door with the brass key.
The back room smelled of coffee and old paper.
My desk was still where I had left it, with my adding machine and the green lamp, and a framed photograph of the shop's opening day.
Boone was in the middle of it, grinning, and I was twenty and holding the ribbon.
I turned the photograph face down.
"Annie."
Rafe was in the doorway with his hand on the frame.
"Fifteen years," I said. "I sat at this desk every day. I balanced his books while he bought her paint."
"I know."
"He's sitting at a bar somewhere thinking it's still his."
"Come here."
"No." I took a step toward him. "You come here."
He crossed the room, and I took his face in both hands and kissed him hard.
He kissed me back with his whole mouth.
His hands went to my hips, and he lifted me onto the desk.
The adding machine slid and hit the floor, and neither of us looked down.
I pulled his jacket off and his shirt after it.
