Chapter 14: Ginny's Kitchen

Ginny's house sat behind the clubhouse, a narrow yellow place with a porch light and a kitchen that smelled of burnt toast.

It was past one in the morning.

Cade had walked me to the door and then turned around and sat down on the porch steps without being asked.

"I'll be here," he said.

"I know," I said, and went in.

Ginny put a kettle on and did not say a word until it whistled.

Then she set two mugs on the table and sat down across from me and took off her reading glasses.

"His brother died when Cade was thirty," she said. "A motorcycle on the coast road. He was twenty-six, and he was the funny one."

I held my mug in both hands.

"Cade did not cry at the funeral. He did not cry for three weeks. Then he put the ashes in a coffee can and told me he was taking them to a lake in Nevada where their father used to take them fishing."

"Reno."

"A little north of it. He scattered them at dusk." She turned her mug a quarter turn. "He called me at two in the morning from a parking lot. I thought somebody had died."

"What did he say?"

"He said, Ginny, I think I just got married."

I laughed before I could stop it.

It was a short cracked sound, and Ginny laughed too, her smoker's laugh, and then she wiped her eyes with her knuckle.

"I thought he was drunk," she said. "He was not drunk. He sounded the way he used to at seven years old, when something had gone right and he didn't trust it."
