Chapter 36: Knock

Willa's POV

Bree told me.

She did not mean to.

She came to the clinic at noon with a bag of clean towels for the cats, and sat on the waiting room chair with her hands folded on her knees.

"Cade's truck was at the garage until two," she said. "I drove past it on the way home from the bar. The bay doors were down."

"He said he'd be late."

"Rory's bike was outside."

I put down my pen.

"Both of them?"

"Both. I saw the light on under the door." She bit her lip. "I'm sorry. I thought you knew."

I went back to the appointment book.

I wrote down a beagle's name and the date of its shots and got the day wrong, and I had to cross it out.

When I got home Cade was in the kitchen with the dog's head in his lap.

He looked up.

"You're early," he said.

"I got off at four."

"Good," he said. "I made soup."

"Where were you last night?"

"I told you," he said. "The garage."

"Until two?"

His face did not change.

He had learned that from somewhere, and I did not like the teacher.

"I had work."

"With the doors down?" I said.

"Willa."

"Bree drove past," I said. "Rory's bike was there. Is it a coincidence?"

"It's a family matter."

"I've heard that one," I said.

"It's a family matter and I'm handling it. I will tell you when I know what it is."

"That's the second time you've said it," I said.

"I know."

"Cade." I came across the kitchen. "I set one rule. One. Both hands on the table."
