The waiting room held a beagle and its owner, a woman with a canary, and two teenagers with a cardboard box that mewed.
The beagle man looked up from his seat and recognized Rory at once, because everyone in Port Alder had heard about the dead brother.
"Morning," said Rory, to the room, warmly.
He leaned both forearms on my desk.
"I need five minutes," he said. "Family business. I'll buy you a coffee after."
"I'm at work."
"It's one page." He slid the clipboard across to me.
There was a single sheet on it, pressed flat.
His left hand lay on top of it, spread wide, with the silver ring on the thumb.
A strip of white showed at the bottom, with a line drawn across it and an X.
"Just your name," he said. "Cade said you'd be reasonable."
I looked at the hand.
I looked at the sheet.
Then I looked at him.
A hundred things went through my head at once, but the clearest was a red tablecloth, and a pen, and a man's palm over a piece of paper in a room full of bikers.
My stomach rolled, and for a second I thought I might be sick on the desk.
It was not the baby.
"Cade said that?" I asked.
"This morning."
"He slept on the couch, Rory. He didn't say a word to me this morning."
"Then he forgot." He smiled. "Come on, Willa. It's club business. It's about saving the cannery. Cade's tied up."
"Take your hand off it."
"What?"
"The page," I said. "Take your hand off the page."
The room went quiet.
The teenagers stopped whispering.
The beagle man lowered his newspaper.
Rory looked at me, and for the first time his face did not do anything at all.
He lifted his hand.
I picked up the sheet.
It was one page, typed, with a heading.
