Chapter 38: The Man in the Grey Coat

I took my lunch on the bench by the harbor, because I could not sit in that waiting room another minute.

I had tea in a paper cup and a sandwich I could not eat.

The ten names were still folded in my work bag.

I called Cade twice from the bench.

It went to voicemail both times.

At twelve-twenty a man sat down at the other end of the bench.

He wore a grey wool coat too heavy for the weather and polished shoes, and he carried two coffees in a cardboard tray.

He set one down between us.

"It's decaf," he said. "I'm told you're off the other kind."

I did not touch it.

He was in his fifties, heavy through the shoulders, with a clean-shaved face and the small, careful smile of a man who is paid to be patient.

He had not raised his voice yet, and I knew already that he never would.

"Mrs. Donohue."

"Prescott."

"Of course. I'm sorry." He looked at the water. "Pretty harbor. My father fished out of one like it. They've all been bought now."

"Who are you?"

"A friend of your brother-in-law's." He took the lid off his coffee. "Two of my boys visited your husband on Monday. I hear it went badly. They frightened you."

"They didn't."

"No?" He glanced at me. "Then they weren't doing it right."

The gulls were loud.

I was sitting very straight, with both hands round the paper cup, and my pulse had begun to run in my ears.

"Here's my difficulty," he said. "Rory Donohue owes me eighty thousand dollars. I've been patient for five years, and for four and a half of them I thought he was dead, which I regret, because I'd have liked to say a few words at the funeral."
