Chapter 40: The Night Before
At two in the morning, the dog woke us both.
He stood at the bedroom door with his hackles up and his one eye on the dark, and he made a low sound I had never heard from him.
Cade was out of bed before I was awake.
He pulled on his jeans and went down the hall without a light, and I followed in his shirt with my pulse in my throat.
Someone was sitting on the porch steps.
I saw his outline through the glass of the front door, and a thin cigarette-glow, and the shape of a man's shoulders.
Cade opened the door.
Rory looked up from the bottom step, and he was crying.
It was not the pullout kind, brimming and graceful.
He was bent over his own knees, and his face was swollen, and he had not slept in days.
He did not have his ring on.
"They know," he said. "They know where you live. They've been driving past the cottage since Tuesday. I couldn't." He drew a breath that shook his whole chest. "Please, Cade. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I'll do anything. I'll leave town tonight if you give me forty thousand dollars."
Cade stood in the doorway.
I stood a pace behind him, and he turned his head, and I saw him ask.
He did not speak.
He only looked, and lifted his eyebrows, the smallest question in the world.
"Together," I said.
He nodded.
He stepped out onto the porch, and I stepped beside him, and the cold came up through the boards.
"Forty thousand," Cade said.
"It's what I need. For them to leave us alone."
"I don't have forty thousand."
"The garage," Rory said.
