Chapter 9: What He Kept

Cade's POV

I was in the garage by five in the morning because I could not stay in that bed.

She was asleep in it, with one arm thrown across my pillow and her hair over her face.

I stood in the doorway and looked at her for a long time.

Then I went downstairs and let the dog out and drove down the hill with the radio off.

The garage was cold and smelled of oil.

I put the kettle on the shop stove and stood with my back to the room.

I had spent four years planning how to tell her.

I had a speech.

I had a table with a red cloth, and I'd have set it with flowers and a quiet voice, and she would have heard it all in daylight and decided for herself.

Then Travis moved first.

I put my hand to the inside of my vest, where the folded note was.

It was soft from four years of being carried.

I did not take it out.

I knew every word on it without looking.

At six the side door opened and two men came in out of the gray light.

One was Travis's cousin.

The other was a man who had been a prospect in our club until the spring, when I sent him home for lying about a debt.

They didn't have vests on.

They carried a tire iron each, and they walked in slowly.

"Travis wants his bike," the cousin said. "We're taking it. You can't stop us."

"Take it."

They stopped.

"That's it?" the other one said.

"It's his. The title's in his name." I pointed with my chin at the black Harley in the back bay. "The keys are on the hook. Tell him he owes me the rest."

"The rest of what?"
