Chapter 17: Both Sides
Mabel's cousin ran a twelve-room motel on the edge of Powell, with a pink sign and a dog asleep in the office doorway.
She gave us the end unit without asking for a name.
By noon the lawyer's courier had come and gone with a plain envelope.
Inside it was every message on Rafe's cracked phone, printed, with the go-between's number circled in red.
I had taken the photographs myself, at the little table by the window, with Rafe sitting across from me and his splinted hand in his lap.
He hadn't asked me one question.
He had unlocked the phone, pushed it across, and looked at the wall.
When I finished, I put it down.
"There's the wire receipt," I said. "Yesterday at four. The money went back."
"Yes."
"Dorian's name isn't on any of it."
"Just a D."
"A D and a number that bills to a company my father founded." I almost laughed. "He used the Foundation's phone plan."
"Is that good?"
"It's very good."
He nodded.
He had a swollen eye, three cracked ribs on the left side that matched mine on the right, and a way of sitting very straight so I wouldn't see how much it hurt.
"I need to say something," I said.
"All right."
"I have terms."
He looked at me.
"Until the hearing, you take orders from me. Not Otis, not Mabel. Me."
"That's my rule, turned around."
"Yes. You can say no."
"I'm not going to say no."
"Then the first order is that you eat something. Mabel's cousin left a tray."
He almost smiled.
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
I put my hands flat on the table.
It was easier to talk to the table.
"Dorian's plan was a conservatorship," I said. "The doctor, a facility, a signature. I'd have spent my life in a room with a garden. I got out of that church because of a whisper. If I'd missed it, I wouldn't be here."
