Chapter 18: The Road Took My Brother

Rafe's POV

She made me tell it sitting down.

We took the two plastic chairs outside the motel room, in the thin afternoon sun, with a view of a dumpster and a long line of hills.

She put a coffee in my good hand and sat with her bandaged arm across her knees.

"From the beginning," she said. "Not the short version."

I turned the brass key over in my fingers.

I hadn't told this to anyone but Otis in four years.

"My brother was twenty-two," I said. "He was the only one of us who liked school and the only one who could hear what was wrong with an engine from across a yard."

"He worked at the shop."

"Four years. Tire and Brake on Main Street. The old man who owned it let him run the place when he had his stroke."

"And then my father's company bought the building."

"Your father's company bought the whole block," I said. "They were putting in a lodge for tourists. They paid the old man's heirs and gave everyone sixty days."

She flinched, very slightly.

I kept going.

"The lodge never got built. The money ran out, or the plan changed. I don't know. The lot's still a fence and weeds."

"Rafe."

"Let me finish."

She nodded.

"He took a night job. Parts delivery for a chain out of Knoxville. Forty miles of mountain road in the dark, and then back up the Gap with a van full of brake pads."

My hand tightened on the key.

"There's a bend at the top, the third one past the cattle gate. For ten years the county promised to replace the rusted rail there with a real one."
