Chapter 22: Vows
Before he said his one more thing, the old woman rapped her cane on the floor.
"One piece of business first," she said. "Section nine passes Mr. Baskin's claim on the grounds to the school."
"The note is now owed by Lindenmere to Lindenmere. I expect the school will forgive itself."
The gym roared, and she waved a gloved hand for quiet.
"Go on, young man."
Mal cleared his throat into the microphone.
I had known him for nineteen months, and I had never seen him nervous.
He took off the coverall cap he'd had in his back pocket and held it in both hands.
"Four hundred people just heard me say a thing on a stranger's phone," he said. "I'd like to say something on purpose."
He came around the lectern and stepped down off the stage to stand in front of me, on the floor, with the whole school watching.
"When I came to this building, I mopped the east hall at night so no one would look at me."
"Edie looked anyway."
A few parents laughed softly.
"I signed her paper, and the paper said it bought nothing from her but a signature."
"I meant it. It's the only term I'm proud of."
He took my left hand in his scarred one.
