I read the petition twice at the kitchen island, and by the second time my hands had stopped shaking.
"They can't do this," I said.
"They can file it," Nolan said. "My lawyer says the hearing will be Friday morning, because the word emergency is in the title."
"Friday."
"Two days."
He had already called three people, and he stood with the phone in his fist.
I did not look at him for long.
I was still angry at him, and I was trying to be angry at the right man.
At ten, the housekeeper brought me the landline.
"It's Mrs. Laughlin," she whispered. "The old one."
"Bridget." Winifred's voice was low and flat. "The Foundation board meets at one today. I would like you to be in the room."
"Why?"
"Because I am about to do something I should have done four years ago, and I want you to watch me do it."
I almost hung up.
