Chapter 21: Forty-Nine Months

For a long moment the ballroom made no sound at all.

Then my father found his voice, and it came out too high.

"That's fake," he said. "That's a computer. They can make anything on a computer."

"Stan," a man at the front table said. "Sit down."

"I never signed that! I want my own lawyer!"

"You're welcome to have him," Nolan said.

My father spun around, and the microphone squealed in his fist.

"She's lying!" he shouted at the room. "This whole family is lying! I raised that girl! I fed her for twenty-one years!"

"Dad," I said.

"I fed you!"

"I know. You fed me, and then you put me out in November with one trash bag."

I took a folded paper out of my sleeve.

I held it up so the people at the front tables could see the red capital letters.

"I was in the shelter on Third Street," I said. "I was pregnant and I had no bed. I wrote you a letter and said I needed three hundred dollars for a crib."

My father stared at the paper.

"You wrote NO across it," I said. "You kept it in a shoebox with ten more, and you never opened them."
