Chapter 18: Page Six
Matthias didn't move.
He stood against the glass with my hand in his, and the lake was a grey blur behind his head.
"Say it again," he said.
"I love you."
"Hanna."
"It costs me two million dollars. I'm saying it anyway."
A sound caught in his throat, half a laugh and half a sob.
"I wrote that clause in September," he said, "before I knew your name."
"For whoever signed," I said.
"For whoever signed. I knew myself. If she was kind, I'd want her, and I'd ruin it by wanting."
"Then you came upstairs in a grey fleece with a scanner on your wrist."
"You asked for four hundred and eighty thousand dollars, not a dollar more, and you looked me in the eye."
"By the time I slid the folder across, I was already gone."
"And you left page six in," I said.
"It was never meant for you. It was meant to stop me saying it first."
I stared at him.
"You kept a clause to stop yourself from saying it."
