Chapter 22: The Wedding

We were married the next Saturday, in the glass conservatory at Harrow House, with rain on the roof and forty chairs.

I wore ivory, not white, and flat shoes, because I intended to stand all day.

Pippa held the ring in her fist and my bouquet in the other, and threatened the photographer.

"One smile," she hissed. "If you cry on my dress, I'm charging you."

"It's orange."

"It's a statement."

Odile sat in the front row with her cane across her knees and her chin up.

Sybil sat beside her, in blue, with her hair down.

At the back stood the gray man from the board, two directors from the company, and a row of lab students in their best jeans.

There was no music at first.

Rhys stood under the glass at the far end, in a dark suit.

He held his hands clasped in front of him so that I would not see them shake.

I walked down the aisle alone, because I had said I would.

When I reached him he didn't speak.

The judge, a short woman in a green scarf, cleared her throat.

"Dearly beloved," she began, and then she saw my face and shortened it.

She asked each of us a single question and let us answer it.
