Chapter 15: The Sixteen-Year-Old

"The entry fee for the Golden Gloves qualifier is a hundred and forty dollars," the sixteen-year-old said.

He stood in the bag room doorway with his gym bag on his shoulder and his chin up.

"I need it by Friday, and my mom works nights, and you have money."

Cal put the mop in its bucket and dried his hands on his shorts.

He looked at me.

I stayed where I was, on the stool by the tape shelf, and said nothing.

"No," Cal said.

The boy's face went hard.

"You gave your lawyer more than that to say sorry."

"I did."

"You can't buy a hundred and forty dollars of anything for a kid who's actually here?"

"I can't buy anything here. That's the rule of the building."

"Then what good are you?"

It was a fair question for a sixteen-year-old to ask.

Cal didn't flinch from it.

"I can show you something that doesn't cost anything," he said. "If you want it."

"What?"

"Get in the ring with me."

The boy stared at him, then at me.

I shrugged.

They climbed in together, the long gray man and the stocky kid.

Cal held up two pads, badly.

"Throw a jab."

The boy threw one that cracked.

"Again. Before you throw it, look at my face."
