Chapter 24: Five A.M. Again
At half past four my alarm went off, and Cal reached over me and shut it.
"You don't have to go down," I said into the pillow.
"I know."
He didn't move.
The bedroom window was gray with the first of the morning.
We had moved to the bed some time after midnight, in a heap of quilt, with my head on his arm.
He lay on his back with one eye swollen half shut from Saturday.
The bruise along his ribs had gone the color of a plum.
I sat up and looked at him in the light.
"Stay there," I said.
I went to the bathroom in my T-shirt and ran the tap hot.
I came back with a washcloth, a towel, and the bag of frozen peas from my freezer.
He watched me with his good eye as I sat on the edge of the mattress.
"What are you doing?"
"Taking care of you."
"I'm fine."
