Chapter 11: My Mother's Hands
Agnes was at the kitchen island, shelling peas into a bowl she didn't need.
She heard the front door and the two sets of footsteps and she didn't look up.
Then Margot's shadow crossed the counter, and my mother's hands stopped.
The peas rolled out of the pod and across the granite.
"Hello," Margot said.
Agnes stood.
She stood slowly, one hand on the island, and she looked at Margot for a long time without saying a word.
Her mouth moved.
"I held you for two minutes," she said.
Her voice cracked in the middle.
"That was all I let myself. Two minutes in the nursery, before I made the change. You had your fist closed around my finger, and I thought, I'll never get this back."
Margot's face crumpled, and she hid it, and she didn't leave.
"Can I see your hands?" she said.
Agnes held them out, palms up, trembling.
Margot laid her own hands next to them.
They were the same.
Long fingers, square at the tips, and a crooked little finger on the right that bent toward the ring finger.
I put my fist against my mouth.
"I always hated these hands," Margot whispered. "My mother said they were piano hands. I never learned to play."
"I never learned either," said Agnes. "I wanted to. I washed floors."
They both started laughing and crying at once, and I turned and walked out of the kitchen to give them the room.
I made it as far as the glass hall.
Then I put my back against the window and slid down the wall, and my whole body shook.
