Chapter 13: Two Daughters
Agnes read the letter at the kitchen island with her glasses pushed up on her forehead.
I had carried the envelope home in my lap and hadn't opened it, and she knew that without asking.
Torben stood at the stove making coffee nobody wanted, with his back to us, which was how he gave people a room.
She couldn't read it silently.
She said her eyes wouldn't hold the words, so she read it out loud.
"Dear Agnes."
Her voice shook, and she went on.
"Your badge said Agnes, and I never learned the rest. You brought me a cup of tea at the opening of the new nursery wing, the spring before I got sick."
She stopped and breathed.
"When you handed it over, I saw your hands. They were my daughter's hands, and no one in my family has ever had hands like that."
"Ma," I said.
"Let me finish." She wiped her glasses on her cardigan. "I had already paid a laboratory years before, so I knew she wasn't mine by blood. I didn't know whose she was until your fingers closed around that cup."
