Chapter 15: Safe House
Agnes sat on a flour sack in the back room of my old bakery, with her coat buttoned to her chin and the green suitcase upright between her feet.
Torben had found the trail in forty minutes.
The clerk at the Lake Geneva station remembered a short woman who paid cash for a one-way ticket and cried at the machine.
But I was the one who knew where she'd go from Union Station.
She would go where the ovens were warm and nobody asked questions.
My old boss had let her in through the alley door and given her a mug, and she hadn't touched it.
"Hello, Ma," I said.
She didn't look up.
"The vans will leave if I'm gone," she said. "Cornelius's name stays clean. You get to have your father in peace. I thought it through all the way down on the train."
"You left the letter on my pillow."
"Because I don't deserve to carry it."
I sat on the sack beside her, which took a while, and the flour puffed up around us.
