Chapter 8: Her Choice

"I'll find him," Torben said, looking at the phone. "I'll have the photographer's name by noon."

"No."

"Halley."

"Let them print it." I took the phone out of his hand and set it face down on the planks. "I'm tired of everybody deciding what I'm allowed to do next."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said, "What do you want to do next?"

"You."

The word came out of me like a breath I'd been holding for three weeks.

I stood up, and I held out my hand, and he took it.

We walked up the dock together and through the dark house.

We passed the guest room where Agnes slept with her pill and her secret.

In my bedroom I shut the door and shot the brass bolt myself.

It slid home with a clack that went through my whole body.

"On your side," he said, behind me.

"Yes."

I turned around and pulled his coat off my shoulders and let it fall.

He didn't touch me.

He stood in the lamplight with his hands at his sides and watched me take off the sweatshirt.

Under it I wore a grey nursing tank and leggings, and my belly pushed out round and high between them.

I had been ashamed of my body for four months, and I wasn't tonight.

His eyes went down it slowly.

"You're beautiful," he said.

"I'm a size fourteen and I'm five months pregnant."

"I know. I'm looking at all of it."

His voice was rough.

I'd never heard a man sound like that about me, not once, not Lance.

I crossed the floor and pushed him down onto the edge of the bed.

He sat, and I stood between his knees, and I took his face in my hands and kissed him until he groaned.

His big hands finally came up.

He slid the tank over my head and the leggings down my hips.

He stopped when he saw the purple bruise spread across my left side.

He put his mouth on it, so softly it was only breath.

Then he put it lower.
