Chapter 24: His Own Assassin
They were married under the new plum tree on the first day it flowered.
There were only nine guests, and Ra-on cooked for all of them.
Dong-ju stood between the two men in a borrowed ceremonial coat with the sleeves too short, holding a length of red string in both hands.
It was Ra-on's string.
It was the last of the old ones from his tunic, washed and flattened and knotted at either end.
"I'm not good at this," Dong-ju said.
"Nobody's asking you to be good at it," Ra-on said.
"Brother Ra-on, I might cry."
"Then cry."
"Master, I might also cry."
"I know," said Ryeo-won.
"I can hear you doing it."
The old woman who had taught Ra-on to throw had come up the mountain on a donkey.
She had brought her two grandsons and a crock of pickled plums.
The twins had walked, with nothing but a bundle each.
They wore a look Ra-on had only ever seen on people let out of prison.
The Chief had sent a barrel of rice wine and a sealed letter.
Ryeo-won had made Ra-on read it to him twice.
The letter said the land was his, and the sword was his, and the seal was his.
It said that if he ever let the Chief's grain go unanswered again, the Chief would come up the mountain and stand in the yard until somebody fed him.
It said nothing at all about the blind man's lover, which Ra-on understood was the Chief's way of saying yes.
Dong-ju cleared his throat.
"Mok Ryeo-won," he said, in a voice that cracked on the first syllable.
"Do you take Gil Ra-on, who is the worst cook I ever met, and the best?"
"The one I trust with my life."
"I do," said Ryeo-won.
"You haven't finished."
"I do anyway."
Someone laughed.
Dong-ju wiped his nose on the ceremonial sleeve.
"Gil Ra-on."
"Yes."
"Do you take," Dong-ju began.
"Yes," Ra-on said.
He took his husband's right hand, and Ryeo-won took his left.
