Chapter 19: What He Did at Night

Mathias's POV

I left her asleep with her hand on my bandage.

I got my boots on without waking her.

The Iron Range wolves had made camp on the Redfern side of the river, in the pines below the ring, with a fire and two tents.

Under the old law a camp before a challenge is neutral ground.

A man may walk into it, and talk, and walk out, and no one may touch him.

I walked in.

Six wolves rose from the fire, and the Range alpha looked up from a camp stool with a tin cup in his hand.

"Crowe," he said. "Couldn't sleep?"

"I came to make you an offer."

"I love an offer."

"The Crowe river timber, from the bend to the north fork. Fifty years of rights." I kept my hands at my sides. "You turn around and go home, and she's never mentioned again."

He drank, and set the cup down on his knee.

"That's a lot of timber for a woman you say is yours already."

"It's a lot of timber to save your jaw."

The wolves around the fire laughed.

The Range alpha did not.

"You think I came for the girl?" he said. "I came for Redfern land, and for the hole in your ribs."

I held very still.

"A week old," he said. "Silver. You're favouring the left, Crowe. I could see it from across the yard."

"Anyone could see that."
