Chapter 21: The Reading
I knelt beside Garrick on the flagstones and tore the shirt from his back myself.
The hall gasped as one.
From his neck to his belt the lines ran in tight rows, grey on his skin, and I knew every row.
"My lords," I said. "Listen."
I put my fingertip under the first word and began to read in the old tongue.
I read it as I had read the dead scripts all my twenties, slowly, aloud, giving each sound its weight.
The words rang strange and low in that high hall, and men leaned in to hear.
Garrick's body stiffened under my hand, but not in pain.
Then I said it again in the common speech, one line at a time, so nobody could say they hadn't understood.
"On this night, by the order of the King of Varnholt, Osric Aldemar, the lord of Greywold is bound."
