Chapter 2: Wear Black
Kelsey cries in the parking lot and Estelle orders Mara to apologize, then offers her three thousand dollars to work the wedding in black. Mara says there is something Estelle should know about Saturday.
Kelsey's chin started to shake right on time.
"You're being so cruel."
"I'm being accurate."
"I'm pregnant, Mara." Her voice rose until it carried back to the restaurant doors. "Do you know what stress does to a baby? I came out here to make peace."
"You came out here to ask for my wedding dress."
Her eyes filled.
Kelsey could cry on command.
She had done it at a funeral once to get out of a parking ticket.
"You've always been like this," she said. "You plan everything, so you think you own everything. Dalton chose me. He's happier with me than he ever was with you."
She lifted her chin.
"You were the planner, Mara. Nobody keeps the planner once the party starts."
Behind her, the restaurant door swung open.
Estelle Thurston came down the steps in a pale blue dress with a champagne glass in her hand.
Her eyes went to Kelsey first, and her whole face softened.
"Sweetheart. What happened?"
Kelsey folded into her arms.
"I only wanted to make things right," she sobbed. "She said my baby was a mistake. She said I trapped Dalton. She said she hoped, she hoped..."
She hiccupped.
"I can't even say it."
I had said none of it.
I almost admired the speed.
Estelle stroked Kelsey's hair and looked at me with open disgust.
"Mara. A pregnant girl, in a parking lot, at night. Have you lost your mind?"
She raised her glass an inch.
"Apologize. Now."
A group of cousins had drifted onto the restaurant steps.
One of them was filming again.
For four years, every scene like this had ended the same way.
I swallowed whatever I wanted to say and told them I was sorry, I was tired, I hadn't meant it.
Not tonight.
"Estelle," I said. "I'm not the one who owes anyone an apology."
Her mouth actually fell open.
She stared at me for a long moment.
Then she handed Kelsey her glass and said, low and fast, "Inside. The private room. Both of you."
The private room still held our rehearsal cake, uncut.
My initials were piped on top in buttercream, M and D.
Estelle shut the door and leaned on the table next to it.
"Fine." She tried a smile, but it didn't fit her face. "It's just us. Stop being dramatic."
"I'm not being..."
"The group chat was a kindness. A soft landing, so you could leave with some dignity instead of limping out as the jilted one."
She waved a hand with a perfect manicure.
"Now. Here is what will happen."
She laid it out, cold and flat.
"You'll coordinate Saturday. Professionally. I'll pay you three thousand dollars. You'll wear black, like the rest of the staff, and stand by the service door."
"Wear black," I said. "At my own wedding."
"It isn't your wedding anymore, dear."
She smoothed her dress.
"And when anyone asks, you tell them you stepped aside because Dalton and Kelsey were meant to be."
I said nothing.
"The vendors already have your card on file for the final balance. It would be so awkward to change that three days out. Dalton will pay you back."
She smiled.
"Eventually."
Then she reached out and took my wrist.
Her thumb moved in slow, caring circles.
I looked down at her hand on my skin.
Four years of Thanksgiving dinners.
Four years of "you're like a daughter to me."
Four years of white lilies at my door every October, on the day my father died.
I had thought that was kind.
I had also paid for half her Christmas gifts, because Dalton always forgot.
"Be sensible, Mara," Estelle said. "You've never been the type to make a scene."
I pulled my wrist out of her grip.
I waited to feel something, and what I felt was clear and quiet.
For the first time in four years, nothing in me wanted her approval.
Kelsey was dabbing her eyes with a napkin, watching me over it.
"Just say yes, Mara," she whispered. "Estelle always gets her way. It's easier."
It was the first true thing she had said all night.
Estelle was still smiling.
She believed she had already won.
"Estelle," I said, and I reached for my purse. "There's something you should know about Saturday."
