Chapter 9: Private Office
On Monday I took over the little office behind Cal's front desk.
It had a window, a ceiling fan, and a laptop he had set up for me without being asked.
I had decided on a plan.
I would ask the bank for a certified copy of the wire.
I would ask my father's old lawyer how to open box one-fourteen from overseas.
I would not think about Dalton's nervous face asking a teller three times.
Cal came in with coffee and shut the door behind him.
"The cook wants to know if you're allergic to anything."
"Almonds."
"He'll be devastated. He makes an almond cake."
"Tell him to make it for you."
"I will." He put the cup at my elbow. "Mara, what did Dalton want from your father's box?"
"I don't know."
"You didn't open it in four years."
"I couldn't."
I looked at the screen so I wouldn't have to look at him.
"My father was a foreman on a building site. He fell from a scaffold. They told me it was an accident, and I signed everything they gave me, and I went home, and I put the key in a drawer."
Cal didn't say he was sorry.
He came around the desk, turned my chair to face him, and crouched in front of me.
"Okay," he said.
"Okay what?"
"Okay, we'll find out what's in the box."
"There's no we. It's Friday and then I'm gone."
"I know the rule."
"Then say it."
"No last names, no home." His hand settled on my knee. "I know the rule, and I'm not asking you to break it. I'm asking you to let me be here for four more days."
