Chapter 18: What the Valley Owes
Talin's POV
Shushan put a cold spoon against her son's cheekbone at breakfast and said he would go to Fresno.
"To my cousin," she said, in Armenian. "A month, until the fire has come and gone. Nobody will look for him there."
"Mama," Armen said.
"Nobody can show a photograph of a man who is not here."
I set the coffee pot down harder than I meant to.
"Mayrig, they will show it anyway," I said. "They'll show it and say he ran. Then it's Garo's story, and not his."
She turned on me, and her eyes were wet.
"I have one son."
"I know. I'm asking you to let me keep him with me," I said. "He has hidden in this house six years. He doesn't know how to do anything else, and you let him."
The kitchen was silent.
Armen sat with the spoon against his face and looked at his mother.
"I can't be Vahan at that fire, Mama," he said. "I don't know how to be him there. I only know how to be me."
