The sheriff stood at the foot of Laurel Ridge for four minutes, and Judah counted every one of them.
Tate's hand stayed over his mouth, and neither of them breathed.
Through the slit in the planks, the man in khaki lifted his head and studied the oak.
He took off his hat.
He turned it in his hands.
Then the radio on his belt crackled, and a woman's voice said something about a cow on Route 8.
The sheriff put his hat back on, got into the pickup, and drove away down the gravel.
Tate's hand fell from Judah's mouth.
He sat back on the boards with his eyes shut and his mouth tight.
The new mark glowed purple on his neck.
"He didn't see."
"He knew," Judah said. "He stood there like a man who knew."
"He always stands like that."
They climbed down without speaking.
