Chapter 15: Front Door
Judah did not knock.
The Hatchett front door was unlocked, because no one in Corbin County would walk into the sheriff's house uninvited.
He walked in with his phone held up in front of him and his thumb on the red button.
The screen read LIVE, Marrow Creek Baptist, and a counter in the corner said four.
Four was Hannah, her mother, and two old women who watched the church channel every night.
Hannah already had the thirty-one Fridays.
Judah had mailed them to her on Thursday night, with one line: Keep these safe.
The kitchen was at the end of a short hall, and its light fell yellow across the floorboards.
He heard the belt before he saw it.
It made a wet, flat crack, and a boy's breath hissed out.
Judah turned the corner.
Tate stood at the oilcloth table with both hands flat and his shirt off, and his back was a ladder of red.
