Chapter 21: The Cairns
I shifted back in the snow with the shawl Fenella threw me.
My hands were bleeding from the digging.
I knelt in the churned earth with the Council's lanterns ringing the field, and I held up what I had found.
It was a girl's grey cardigan, rotted nearly to nothing.
Under it lay a small, pale curve of bone.
The elders stopped walking.
I heard a woman at the back make a sound.
"This was cleared," the oldest elder said slowly. "I stood on this ground myself. The cousins walked us over bare grass, and you all believed them."
"They cleared the stones," I said. "They didn't clear what was under them."
I looked across the field at the ring cousin.
He had shifted back into his man's shape, with his dinner jacket in rags and snow melting in his hair.
He stood very still, with the gold ring on its chain against his bare chest.
"There are three beds," I said. "Right here, in a row. You can see where the earth is soft."
