Chapter 10: Whose Name Is on the Car
Preston crossed the family room in three strides and hit his uncle in the face.
It was a bad punch, wild and open-handed, and it cracked across Kenneth's cheekbone.
Kenneth staggered into a chair.
"Preston, stop."
"My son?" Preston's voice was a shout. "My son has your eyes?"
Down the hall, a nurse stood up from the station.
"You told me his blood type was a coincidence," Preston said. "Five years. Every birthday, every doctor, every time he looked at me like I was a stranger. You let me say Dad. You let me tell him I loved him."
"Sit down."
"Don't tell me to sit."
He grabbed his uncle by the collar and slammed him against the wall so hard a framed photograph fell off its hook.
"You bought her for me!" He turned on Lillian, who had dropped to the floor with her hands over her face. "You married me because he told you to!"
"Preston, please," Lillian sobbed. "I love you."
"You love him."
"I love both of you."
It was the stupidest thing I had ever heard, and it filled the whole hallway.
Two security guards came running.
Doctors had come out of every door.
A mother in a bathrobe stood with her hand over her child's ears, staring.
Someone was filming from the nurses' station.
Someone else had stopped an elevator with a hand, to watch.
"Call a doctor for my nephew," Kenneth said to the nearest nurse. "He's having an episode."
She did not move.
"Sir," she said, "I heard everything."
Kenneth straightened his tie, and the cut on his cheek was already swelling.
