Chapter 17: Carried

Quincy opened the folder.

"Page one is a wire transfer from a shell company called Harbor Row, dated five years ago, four hundred thousand dollars."

Nobody spoke.

"Page two is who owns Harbor Row. It's the personal assistant to the chairman of this company."

He looked at the man beside Kenneth.

"Page three is a photograph."

He laid it on the glass.

An alley, a brown jacket, an envelope, a gray suit.

"That's you," Quincy said. "Five years younger. Handing four hundred thousand dollars to the man who held Mrs. Stockwell for three days."

The assistant's lips had gone blue.

"That's... it could be anyone."

"It's your face."

"I was told to!" The words cracked out of him. "I was told to, I only carried the envelope. Mr. Stockwell said it was a security matter. He said nobody would be hurt!"

The room erupted.

Directors were on their feet.

Kenneth did not stand.

"He is lying," he said in a very quiet voice. "He's been under pressure from Crane."

"Nobody was hurt?" I said.

I walked to the assistant, and he flinched.

"Look at me."

He lifted his eyes.

"Three men," I said. "Three days. Was that nobody?"

His face crumpled.

"I didn't know," he said. "I swear to God, I didn't know what they'd do."

"You laughed about it," I said. "Outside his study, over a glass of whiskey. I heard you."

"I..."

"Say it to the board."

He looked at Kenneth.

Kenneth looked at the portrait of his father.

"He told me to put it in my name," the assistant said, in a rush. "The account, the shell company, so it would never trace to him. He said I'd be rich. He said I'd be safe."
