Chapter 15: Albert Lea
The implement dealer sat on the edge of Albert Lea beside a gravel lot full of green tractors, and the man we wanted was under the hood of one of them.
It was a Wednesday, two weeks into November, with the snow cleared off the roads and piled gray along the shoulders.
Aksel had driven the whole hundred miles with both hands on the wheel and said nine words.
I had not made him talk.
Halle's placement had gone back on the list on Monday.
Aksel had walked into the nursing director's office and told him in person what the dean had done, then signed a statement saying so.
It had cost him nothing but his pride, and I knew he considered it a down payment.
"That's him," Aksel said.
He had stopped the truck at the edge of the lot.
The man under the hood straightened up and wiped his hands on a rag.
He was twenty-three, maybe, stocky and sunburned in November, in a green coverall with a name stitched on the chest.
I saw the moment he looked across the lot and saw the truck.
He stood quite still.
Then he put the rag down on the fender, deliberately, and waited.
"You don't have to do this in front of me," Aksel said.
"I told you I'd come," I said.
"You say it to his face, and I'll watch you do it."
His throat moved.
He got out of the truck.
I rolled my window down an inch.
The wind was cold and smelled of diesel.
Aksel walked across the gravel with his coat open and his hands at his sides, and he stopped six feet from the man.
I could not hear the first words.
I saw Aksel say something short, and I saw the man's face change from watchfulness to something harder.
Then Aksel kept talking.
I opened the door and got out, because I could not stand not to hear.
