Chapter 8: The Clinic
Thea's POV
"He's the father," Halle said.
We were in the waiting room of the campus clinic, on two molded chairs under a poster about hand-washing, at eight o'clock on a Tuesday.
I had not said a word about it.
"How," I said.
"You've thrown up in the sink every morning for a week.
"You won't drink the coffee.
"You touch your stomach when you think nobody's looking.
"And Aksel Kvale came to our door at seven a.m. on a Sunday and knelt in the corridor."
"You were on shift."
"I came home early.
"I stood at the end of the hall and watched him put his face on your belly, and then I went back out and walked around the quad for an hour so you could have the room."
I stared at her.
"Halle."
"Don't thank me.
"I'm furious.
"I'm furious at the whole thing, and I'm also, God help me, a little moved."
She had her stethoscope around her neck and a clipboard on her knee, and she looked about fifteen.
