Chapter 18: Franco's Hand

The doorman told me my box was waiting in the back room of the club.

I went alone, at ten the next morning, while Nico slept off a doctor's tape job and three pills.

The back room had a card table, a coffee urn and two capos I had met at my grandmother's funeral.

One was heavy and bald. The other was thin, with a toothpick he moved from side to side.

My steel box sat on the card table between them with its lid shut.

"Miss Marchetti," the heavy one said. "Sit."

"I'll stand."

"Sit," said the thin one, and he pushed the door closed with his foot.

I sat.

"We liked what you did yesterday," the heavy one said. "Brave. Your father's a lucky man."

"He's not," I said.

"Maybe not. But you said some things at that table about Elizabeth that nobody's supposed to say."

"I didn't say a word about Elizabeth."

"You looked at the boss when he said it," the thin one said. "We saw you. So did the others."

He took the toothpick out of his mouth.

"The boss is a generous man. We're less generous. Here's what happens. You swear on your grandmother that you never heard that name in your life. You sign something. And the box stays here until you're a good girl for a year."

"That's my box."

"It's the Family's box. Your father's seal is on every one."

I put my hands flat on my knees so they wouldn't see them move.
