Chapter 24: Home
The access road to the federal prison runs a mile and a half through mesquite and caliche.
At five forty on a cold morning in February I stood at the end of it, beside the gate, with my daughter's hand in mine.
Behind us, in a line that disappeared around the bend, sat forty-one Arriaga tractors with their engines running.
Every driver on my payroll had come, on his own time, in his own jacket.
At six they turned on their high beams.
The whole road went white.
My mother stood on the shoulder in her navy coat with a thermos.
My uncle sat at the wheel of the yard shuttle at the back of the line, in his yellow vest, with the window rolled down.
She walked the length of the column to his door.
She handed him a tamal wrapped in foil.
She did not say a word, and she walked back.
He ate it with both hands, crying, in front of forty-one drivers who looked politely at their dashboards.
At 6:04 the steel door beside the gate opened.
