Chapter 13: Not Her Face

Meiyin did not remember crossing the mirror.

She was on the bedroom carpet in the dark, with the bronze glass cold at her back, and the jade pin was in her fist.

She was shaking.

Bai Ling stepped out of the glass behind her, barefoot, in the grey sweater, and stopped an arm's length away.

"Meiyin."

"Don't."

"Let me say..."

"Your wife.

Your wife had my mother's face."

Meiyin turned.

She had never been so angry in her life.

Under the anger there was something much worse, and she did not want to look at it.

"Three weeks, Bai Ling.

You have had your hands on me for three weeks.

Whose face did you see?"

"Yours."

"Liar."

"I have never..."

"Whose face?"

Bai Ling did not answer.

She stood with her hands open at her sides and let Meiyin look at her.

Meiyin crossed the carpet in three steps and took a fistful of the grey sweater.

She hauled Bai Ling out of the bedroom and into the hall.

Bai Ling came without a word.

At the head of the stairs Meiyin shoved her back against the banister, hard enough that the old wood creaked.

"Say it was her," she said.

"Say you were thinking of her."

"It was not her."

"Then why did you go quiet when you saw the pin?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of this."

Bai Ling looked at her, steady and pale, and her chin lifted.

"Do what you need to do," she said.

"I will not stop you."

Meiyin's whole body went hot.

She tore the sweater up over Bai Ling's head and threw it down the stairwell.

She tore at the black pants and shoved them to Bai Ling's knees, and the underwear with them.

Bai Ling stood naked against the banister rail, breathing fast, with her hands gripping the wood behind her.

Meiyin was still dressed in her silk robe, and she did not take it off.

She put her mouth on Bai Ling's collarbone and bit.

Bai Ling gasped.

"Again," she said.

Meiyin bit harder, and dragged her teeth down to the breast, and closed her mouth over the nipple.
