Chapter 17: Every Inch

I took the chain off the door.

He didn't step in.

"Say you want me to come in," he said. "I won't unless you do."

"Come in, Declan."

He came in, dripping on my mother's linoleum, and stood in the hall with his hands still open.

I took the quilt off the back of the couch and wrapped it around his shoulders.

"Terrence came here today," I said.

"I know. Your mother called me."

"My mother has your number?"

"She got it off Gwen. She told me to bring you flowers." He tried to smile. "I couldn't afford flowers."

I stood in front of him with the spoon.

"Terrence told me what your grandmother wanted," I said. "I'm not here to ask if it's true."

"I'm here to ask what you want."

He closed his eyes.

"I want you," he said. "And I will make her say it to your face."

"Okay."

"But I know what I did."

"I climbed your mother's roof, and no contract told me to."

I swallowed.

"I know what it felt like when you laughed," he said. "A plan didn't do that. A plan couldn't."

"That isn't a proof."

"No. It's only the only thing I have."
