Chapter 22: Not Yet

"Whether I'm coming back to you," I said to the ceiling. "That was the question."

"And the answer?"

"Not yet."

He took it without flinching.

"Not yet," he said, "is a long way from no."

"It's also a long way from yes. If I say yes, it's because I want to, and I'll want to when I'm sure. Not because you're sorry and not because it was good."

"It was good," he said gravely.

I hit him with a pillow.

He laughed, the first full laugh I had ever heard from him, and it filled the whole bright room.

Then he went to work in a city I was not in, and I went to mine.

He wrote on Fridays.

Not texts.

Letters, on paper, short ones, and none of them asked me anything.

The first was about a driver who had fallen asleep at a rest stop and been woken by Dalton's call, a thing the man's wife had cried over.

The fifth was about the rain.

I answered the fifth.

Four months later I stood in a cemetery in Brookline with a bunch of white tulips in my hands.

It was April.

The grass had come up green over the winter, and the stone was clean, and somebody had been pulling the weeds.

I knew who.

I could feel him at the far end of the path, behind a stand of birches, where I had asked him to wait.

Agnes was in the car with her cane and her tea, pretending to read.

"Hi," I said to the stone.
