Chapter 21: The Fall
Rupert did not climb the stairs.
He turned for the doors instead, at an easy walk.
He didn't make it far.
Scott was standing in the aisle with his hands in his pockets, and he did not move out of the way.
"Rupert."
"Excuse me, Scott."
"I'll excuse you after the storage room."
Three hundred people were watching, and Rupert knew it.
His face smoothed over.
"This is theater," he said, loudly, to the room.
"A young woman with a grudge has staged an ambush."
"If Mrs. Harrington has an accusation, she can take it to a court."
"I will," I said into the microphone. "First I'd like to introduce two people who were there."
At the back of the room, the old guard got to his feet.
He did it in stages.
The young man beside him took the oxygen tank by its handle.
He walked it down the aisle at the old man's pace, and the crowd opened on both sides of them.
It took a long time, and nobody spoke.
The guard stopped at the foot of the stage and looked up at the nine paintings.
"I was the night guard at the art school," he said.
