Chapter 19: The Empty Chair
The ballroom of the Jung-gu hotel was being dressed for a king.
Staff in black vests carried round tables across a floor of pale marble, and twenty chandeliers hung dark above them, waiting for the switch.
Six hundred chairs stood in rows along the wall, wrapped in white.
I walked in at ten on Thursday morning with Seung-hwan beside me.
The event manager met us at the door with a binder and a strained smile.
"Mr. Ryu," he said. "Madam Ahn has finalized the seating. Would you like to review the head table?"
"Show me."
He led us past the stage, where a glass case on a velvet stand waited under a spotlight, empty.
I looked at it for a second too long.
The head table was round and enormous.
Madam Ahn stood beside it with a seating chart in her hand and the niece at her shoulder.
She gave instructions to the staff in a pleasant, carrying voice.
"The Chairman here," she said. "Myself on his left."
