Chapter 17: Seven Days
He had pulled the carved chair to the window and sat in it with the shutters thrown wide.
Zhiyao stood naked in the silver light, looking down at him.
The cloud sea lay below the Terrace, white and endless, and a half moon hung above it.
"Come here," said Wuyan.
"You want me on your lap."
"Facing out. So you can see it."
"That isn't an order."
"It is a request," said the Emperor. "From a man who has run out of orders."
She laughed softly.
She stepped between his knees and let him look.
He ran both hands up the outsides of her thighs and over her hips, slow, reverent, with the calloused palms of an old soldier.
He kissed her stomach and the gold seal and the small scar beneath it.
"Come here," he said again, thickly.
She turned her back to him and let him draw her down.
He was already bare, already hard.
She sat across his thighs, her back against his broad chest, and felt his cock lying hot against the small of her back.
His arms came around her waist.
His beard brushed her shoulder.
"There," he murmured. "Look."
She looked.
The clouds rolled and heaved in the moonlight, silver and blue, and far out on the rim of the world a pale line of dawn had begun to gather.
"I came here most nights for three hundred years," he said. "I sat in this chair and watched that line. I never thought about it."
"What do you think about now?"
"How many nights I have left to sit here with you."
"All of them."
"I want to believe that."
"Believe it," said Zhiyao. "I'm telling you."
His hands slid up from her waist.
He cupped her breasts in his big warm palms, thumbs brushing her nipples.
