Chapter 20: The Edge
The blindfold was the black silk from her own sash, folded twice.
She tied it at the back of his head, over the silver in his hair, and tugged the knot.
"Can you see?"
"No."
"Good."
He knelt on the rug at the foot of the chair, naked, with his hands resting on his thighs.
She had told him to put them there and not move them.
His back was straight, and his chest rose and fell steadily.
He looked like a statue of a king carved by someone who had never seen one.
She sat in the chair in her thin inner robe, with her knees together, and looked at him for a long time.
"You'll stay there all night," she said.
"Yes."
"You'll move when I tell you to, and not before."
"Yes, my lady."
"If you want something, you don't take it. You ask."
His mouth curved.
"May I ask for something now?"
"Not yet."
She put one foot on his shoulder.
He did not flinch.
She ran her toes slowly up the side of his neck, and under his jaw, and tilted his face up.
The beard rasped against her instep.
"I want you to listen," she said. "Only listen. Tell me what you hear."
"Your robe," he said. "The silk, when you shift. Your breath. It is a little fast."
"Why?"
"You are enjoying this."
"What else?"
"The lamp. A moth against the paper. The cloud wind, very far." He swallowed. "My own heart."
"Good. Now."
She opened her robe.
He heard it.
His head turned a fraction toward the sound.
She let the silk fall off her shoulders and spread her knees.
She slid her hand down her stomach and between her legs.
"What am I doing?"
His breath stopped.
"You are touching yourself."
