Chapter 10: Low Water

By Friday morning the creek was down a foot.

I stood on the bank in my new boots, staring at the line of wet mud on the rocks where the water used to be.

It looked half drained.

Jace crouched at the edge with his hat pulled low, running a hand through the muddy trickle.

He didn't say anything.

He hadn't said much since breakfast.

"Maybe it's just a dry spell," I said.

"It's not."

"Holcomb said he'd draw it down. He didn't say he'd shut it off."

"He doesn't have to."

"Jace."

"A foot today. Two feet by Monday. By the first hard frost there won't be enough to water a hundred cows."

He stood up, and his face was gray.

"Three hundred mother cows," he said. "Chet's whole life. Lottie's whole life. I'm supposed to just stand here."

"We can call the county."

"The county sold him the damn gate."

"A lawyer, then."

"Do you know what that costs?"

"I know I have eleven thousand dollars from Lottie and four thousand of my own."

"That's not even a retainer."

"Then we find another way."

He rounded on me.

"I'm not asking you to find a way," he said. "I'm telling you I'm handling it."

"By staring at a creek?"

His jaw clenched.

"You don't understand what water means out here."

"Then explain it."
