Chapter 13: Whose Idea
We went down the hill so fast I lost a shoe in the cemetery grass.
Jace didn't wait for Chet's truck.
He ran, and I ran after him in one boot and one stocking, holding Lottie's letter against my chest.
The creek bed behind the house was a long ribbon of wet gravel.
A last thin skin of water slid over the stones, and then there was nothing.
Minnows flipped in a puddle the size of a dinner plate.
Jace knelt and scooped them into his hat, one by one, and carried them upstream to a deeper pool.
He did it without a word.
I stood on the bank and watched his big hands shake.
Chet pulled up behind us and cut the engine.
"That gate's Holcomb's on paper," he said through the window. "The water's ours by a decree older than all three of us. We fight it tomorrow."
"Tomorrow," Jace said.
"Today you go in the house and eat something."
"I'm not hungry."
"Then you go in and sit down."
Jace set the empty hat on a rock.
"She wrote it like a recipe, Granddad," he said.
"Who did?"
"She planned all of it, Granddad."
He wiped his hands on his good jacket.
"And I walked right into it."
