Chapter 14: The Headgate
"We'll be quick," said the man from the state water office.
He held out a paper with a stamp on it.
"Mr. Holcomb has complained that the Ransom Fork ditch crossing his easement is being tampered with."
"Nobody's touched a ditch," Jace said.
"Then you won't mind if I confirm the headgate is shut as permitted."
"It's shut," Holcomb said pleasantly. "Fully within my rights. I wanted a witness."
I looked at the papers, at the watch, at the cheerful face above the watch.
"You brought a state employee to our front door to tell us you stole our water," I said.
"I brought him to tell you it's legal."
"On a Saturday night."
"I'm a busy man, Ms. Haddad."
The water office man looked at his shoes.
"For what it's worth," he said quietly, "the downstream rights are a separate question. That's a court matter."
"It is," Holcomb said. "And courts take months. Cows drink every day."
Jace took a step forward.
I put my hand flat on his chest.
"Not on the porch," I said. "Not with a witness."
